Cold Water Bucktail Walleyes: Pre-spawn walleye on Wisconsin’s Green Bay. Jason Mitchell joins guide Bret Alexander in early April out of Oconto. Several Green Bay tributaries like the Fox, Oconto and Peshtigo all offer tremendous walleye fishing opportunities. These fish migrate into these rivers to spawn and stage in front of these rivers each spring. We share some valuable information on how to use side imaging to find these fish and how to recognize water temperature and water color that dictates where these fish will be. In this video, we battled some extremely strong winds and a brutal cold front with surface temperatures that were below forty degrees. Casting hair jigs caught most of the fish for us. We break down why hair jigs like the Northland Deep-Vee Bucktail Jig are so deadly for catching walleye in cold water. We also break down a modification tip of adding a stinger hook.

Deep-Vee Bucktail Jig

Bubblegum Deep-Vee Bucktail Jig

Deep-Vee Bucktail Jig – Bubblegum

The Deep-Vee Bucktail Jig sports a keeled “DEEP-VEE” design that’s thicker on top and thin on bottom to track straight and fall fast. It also features large eyes that exude a “match-the-hatch” realism. Dressed with bucktail on the back end this jig can be fished by itself or with your favorite type of live bait or plastics.

  • Keeled “DEEP-VEE” design tracks straight and falls fast
  • Realistic 3D eyes “match the hatch” and entices strikes
  • Life-like bucktail moves and acts like an injured baitfish

Northland Fishing Tackle® – EST. 1975

In 1975, a young Northwoods fishing guide named John Peterson started pouring jigs and tying tackle for his guiding clients in a small remote cabin in northern Minnesota. The lures were innovative, made with high-quality components, and most importantly were catching fish when no other baits were working! The word spread like wildfire, the phone started ringing for Team Northland®… and the Northland Fishing Tackle® brand was in hot demand!
