Trolling Crankbaits for Shallow Walleye ā Trolling cranks for shallow spring walleye. Solid program for catching shallow post spawn walleye early in the year. Targeting walleye on some of the āfeeder lakesā connected to Devils Lake. These shallow dish bowl lakes are very productive and many examples of this type of fishery occur across North Dakota. This spring in particular has seen a lot of strong wind and rain. Water temps have been pushed down and mixed where there is not much variation so far with water temps. These conditions are perfect for trolling crank baits. We troll size five Northland Rumble Shads in five to eight feet of water to hunt down fish. We run planer boards to cover more water and this is a deadly program when fish are not pushed up on top of shorelines. This is the formula for catching a lot of walleye right now on shallow prairie lakes that have little structure and often windswept.
