Lake of the Woods South Shore Ice, Fishing & Trails Report: by Sportsman's Lodges

A good walleye bite has been found on the deep mud and reefs in 27’-35’ this week. Trolling with crank baits and drifting with gold spinners tipped with a crawler or frozen shiner continues to work well. Garden Island and Zippel Bay have been notable places. The forecast is calling for lots of sun this week and not a spec of rain in the forecast.  Toss in the sunscreen.

LEECH LAKE FISHING REPORTS LEECH LAKE AREA

Walleyes have been extremely tough to catch during the day and involve quite a bit of work during the evening hours as well. Slip bobbers and leeches or crankbaits are the way to go each evening in 8 to 12 feet off Cedar Point, Sand Point, and the Goose Island Flats. Muskie reports have been better than walleyes with fish being seen and caught on the rocks more so than weeds. Work the cabbage or rice beds in Steamboat Bay and Boy Bay for largemouth bass.

    Minnesota Fishing Reports:

Walleye fishing has fallen into the typical August pattern, however, with the right weather they can still be caught.  The best method has been fishing cabbage weeds that have the wind blowing into them with slip bobbers and leeches. Look for weeds in 8-15 feet of water and set your bobber so it will not get tangled in the weeds.  If the walleyes are active, they will not hesitate to come up and grab it. Gull is starting to pick up as well as the Whitefish chain for active walleyes. The best part about fishing with a slip bobber and leech is that you will catch everything!  Crappies and sunfish have been biting on the deeper weed edge, and casting Beetle Spins or Road Runner jigs have been the best way to locate fish.

    South Dakota Fishing Report:

Very good reports on Bitter Lake this week with numerous reports coming in.  Seem to be biting in the 8-12 foot waters along the weedlines.  A lot of live bait, crawlers to leeches to minnows.  Water is green right now with a lot of algae bloom.  Even Waubay bloomed up the last couple days, but I’ve heard good reports.  – Sportsman’s Cove

The fishing has been slow to fair.  Water temp. is still in that 75-78 degrees.  The panfish bite for bluegills, and some crappies has been good.  We are still catching limits of nice bluegills.  The smallmouth bite has been good, with most fish in that 15-17 inch class with an occasional 18-19 inch fish.  The walleye bite has been slow as well as the pike fishing.  I look for the fall bite to start in late August, but again water temp. will dictate how good the bite will be.  – Fish Hunter Guide Service
